¡¡Harbin
Harbin is a city uniquely blending traditional Chinese customs with various foreign cultures. The city, once considered the backwaters of China is literally growing exponentially---ten years ago, the urban population estimate was one million. Now the population has skyrocketed to more than three million people. Also, Harbin used to be nicknamed "Little Moscow", and though much of the Soviet architecture has been torn down and replaced with modern buildings, the influence of Russia is still evident in the city today.
¡¡Special Reference
Saint Sophia Church

Saint Sophia Church was built in 1907 by Russians and is not only one of several Orthodox churches in Harbin, but is the biggest and most elegant. Recently, the interior of the church was restored, but left in as much of its original state as possible. Inside the church is a museum that explains the history of the church and of Harbin. In 1986, the city government declared Saint Sophia Church a protected building.

Not only is the church the largest in Harbin, but the largest Orthodox Church in China and the Far East. It is over 53 meters high and can hold over 2,000 people. The church was built using Byzantine styles with a mixture of Chinese and Russian culture. Inside the church there are also famous murals painted by Russian artists as well as seven timepieces that that sound seven different notes. The main part of the church is in the shape of a cross and on sunny days, the church reminds people of the Red Square in Moscow.

Northeast Tiger Zoo

The Northeast Tiger Zoo is located on Sun Island Park and the northern side of the Songhua River. The park is nearly 1,000,000 square meters in area and was opened to the public in 1996. The Northeast Tiger Zoo is helping to preserve the northeast tiger, which was put on the endangered species list in 1994 by the World Wildlife Fund. This zoo is the only one in China that provides tigers with a place to live that are similar to their natural habitat.

The main street

Harbin's Main Street is, as the name implies, the main street of the city. The street was built in 1898 and has the best shopping malls, business and hotels located on either side. The street also has some of the best restaurants in Harbin, offering local delicacies such as, homemade ice cream, yogurt and dumplings. Along the street there are also many buildings that have a western and Russian architectural style. This street is also famous for being a haven for beautiful and handsome people! Also in 1898, the city began constructing its railway station and also beginning its large scale construction planning of the city. The original name for Central Avenue was called China Street but changed its name in 1928. The avenue is 1,400 meters long and 11 meters wide and extends from the Songhua River to Xinyang Square. In recent years, several restaurants and stores along the avenue have been remodeled and redecorated to improve the sense of feeling in the city and making the avenue and the city more appealing.

Sino-Russia border trade market

Heilongjiang Province is located near the eastern border of Russia. Thus, this border is very important for both China and Russia. The Heilongjiang Province, in 2007, plans to double its imports and exports with Russia from the 2004 figures in order to boost trade and relations with Russia. There is a long-term cooperation with Russia for exploring different industries in the area, such as wood, paper and paper pulp processing. In order to boost trade with Russia, the province is also rebuilding several of its ports and invests and construct in several other smaller ones. The main cooperation between the province and Russia has been with science and technology, as well as agricultural technology and industrial technology. There is even a Sino-Russian Friendship Science and Technology Park and International Science City located in Harbin.

The Sun Island

Sun Island Park is a park located on the big island in Harbin and also on several smaller islands nearby that are in the Songhua River. There are a lot of things to do on the island and is the biggest activity center in the city. During the summer and the ice festival there are many different programs and lots of things to see. Located on the island is the Siberian Tiger Park, one of the best places to visit in Harbin.

In the wintertime, the island is packed with snow and is a winter wonderland. There are several sports that people can play, including ice hockey, skating, sledding and others. The Snow Carving Festival is also located here every year and is an attraction that must be seen if you are lucky enough to be here in the winter months.

The summer months on the island are also nice, and a lot warmer. There is a fantastic beach swimming resort and sanatorium on the island, which is located near several great beaches and many lakes. People often swim, sun bath, boat or do other summer sports activities. In the summer there is also a fair ground and water world for people to visit. There is also a large garden on the island that is pretty to walk through in the summer months. The park is filled with hidden paths and many buildings that provide a nice peaceful excursion from the busy city.

Songhua River
The Songhua River in northeaster China flows from Changbaishan through the Manchurian Peninsula and empties into the Amur River, separating China and Russia. This river is very important for transporting goods in northeaster China and also provides the source for drinking water to millions of people. Over time, due to the flatness of the Manchurian Peninsula, the river has changed its course every slightly. The result of this is that surrounding plain is filled with swirls and curves and ox-bows lakes showing the paths that the river once took. Along the Songhua River, in various different points and in different cities, there are many activities that people love to take part in, throughout the entire year.
